Key information about the US dollar

The currency itself - what the notes are, who issues them, and where they spend.

The US dollar is the official currency of the United States and the most widely held reserve currency in the world. It is issued by the Federal Reserve, divides into 100 cents, and because so much global trade and travel is priced in it, the cash is accepted in parts of many other countries too.

Banknotes run from $1 to $100. Older series remain legal tender inside the United States, but banks and money changers abroad routinely refuse worn or older-series notes - so when your US dollar cash is travelling onward, ask for newer series, especially in $100s.

At our York Street counter, US dollars are among the most requested of the 22 currencies we hold. If you are buying US dollars in Sydney before you fly, walk up with photo ID or call ahead to reserve a particular mix of notes - and leftover US dollars sell back at the same counter, at the live buy-back rate above.

Older large-denomination notes can be refused overseas, so the series matters as much as the amount. Newer $100 notes are the ones to ask for if you are carrying them beyond the United States.

US travel money tips

Good to know before you fly - the one big rule, and three small ones.

Tipping is cash, and it is not optional

The United States runs on tipping - 15 to 20% in restaurants, a few dollars for drivers, porters and housekeeping - and it is almost always paid in cash, even when the bill goes on a card. Carrying a good share of your money in $1, $5 and $10 notes is the single most useful thing to get right before you fly.

Carry small notes$1 to $20 do the daily work - a $100 is a problem at a taxi or a cafe, not a payment.
Cards are widely acceptedHotels and bookings on card; cash for markets, food trucks and card-minimum counters.
Watch ATM and card feesUS ATMs and overseas card use add fees on both sides - cash you carry avoids them.

Things to see in the United States

From world-famous cities to natural wonders - and a little US dollar cash in hand makes the day-to-day easier wherever you land.

No. No commission, no service fee and no handling charge on top of the rate. The number you agree at the counter is the number you pay or receive.

US dollars are among the most dealt of the 22 currencies we hold, so the usual answer is yes, walk in. For a large amount, or a particular mix of note sizes, call (02) 8014 4222 before you travel into the city and we will confirm and set it aside.

Yes, where the stock allows - tell us when you order or at the counter. It is worth doing: the United States runs on tipping, so a good share of small notes is usually more useful than the same amount in fifties and hundreds.

Yes, over the same counter, in good resaleable condition. Notes that are badly torn, taped, heavily marked or water-damaged may be declined, because every note we take is either sold to the next traveller or sent back overseas.

They are two different jobs. Notes we sell you were bought, insured and held in advance; notes you sell us arrive unplanned and have to be checked, sorted and resold or shipped back. The gap between the two rates is how the business earns anything - there is no commission on top of it.

Bring valid photo identification. Currency exchange is a regulated service in Australia and identification is required for certain transactions under AML/CTF obligations.

Above A$4,000, you get a special rate

It applies to any exchange over A$4,000. The rate is quoted at the counter on the day, on the amount you bring. Call before you come in and we will have the currency and the note sizes ready, or come straight up to Level 2 and ask.
