We started by supplying other currency exchanges

It is where the notes behind our counter come from, and why we can usually get you the note sizes you ask for.

Other currency exchanges are our customers too

Currency Wise started as a wholesale bulk-currency business, supplying financial institutions, other currency exchange services and businesses that move large amounts of cash. Notes by the bundle rather than the handful. That side of the business still runs, and it is what the counter upstairs is stocked out of.

Supplying at that scale means buying in volume, counting and checking every note that passes through, and moving cash securely between sites. It also means holding a wider spread of denominations than a single retail counter would normally carry, because a wholesale client ordering US dollars cares a great deal whether they arrive as hundreds or as twenties.

The counter upstairs runs off the same stock

The retail counter came later. It is the store on Level 2, and it is open to anyone who walks up to it during trading hours - no appointment, no booking. Most people are either buying cash before a trip or bringing back what they did not spend.

Both sides run off the same stock and the same people. So when you come up for one of the 22 currencies we deal in, you are buying from a business that also fills orders for other exchanges. That is why we can usually offer you a choice of note sizes, and why the person serving you can tell you which ones are worth carrying where you are going.

What we keep behind the counter, and why it changes

For the common currencies the answer to "have you got it?" is usually yes. For anything else, it is worth a phone call first.

Every note is stock we already bought

A bank transfer is a message between two computers. Cash is not. Every note in the drawer was bought, paid for, insured, counted and locked in a safe before you asked for it, and it sits there earning nothing until you do.

Ring first for a big amount or an unusual currency

The major currencies are usually on the shelf. Less common ones, and larger amounts of anything, depend on what came in that week. One call on (02) 8014 4222 is the difference between walking up two floors and getting what you came for, and walking up two floors for nothing.

Buying notes back is a different job to selling them

Notes we sell you were ordered and paid for in advance. Notes you sell us turn up unannounced, in whatever currency and whatever denominations you happen to have. They have to be checked, sorted, and either sold again here or sent back to the country they came from. That is the work behind the gap between the two numbers on the board.

What you can actually do at the counter

Buy foreign cash, sell back what you did not spend, and walk out with it the same visit.

You buy foreign cash

Australian dollars in, foreign banknotes out, across 22 currencies. The rate on the board is the rate you get, with no commission or service fee added on top of it.

You sell it back

Home from a trip with notes left over, we buy them back on the currencies we deal in - so leftover cash does not sit in a drawer for a decade.

In person, at the counter

Cash is physical, so this part cannot happen online. You come up to Level 2, we count it out in front of you, and you leave with it.

Cash only at the counter

We do not take card payments at the moment. Bring Australian dollars in cash to buy foreign currency, and when you sell foreign cash to us, we pay you in cash.

No. Walk in any weekday between 9:30am and 5pm. The one time it is worth calling first is a large amount or a less common currency, so we can have the notes and the note sizes ready rather than sending you away.

Because they are two different jobs. Notes we sell you were bought, insured and held in advance. Notes we buy from you arrive unplanned and have to be checked, sorted, and either resold here or sent back to the country they came from. The gap between those two numbers is how the business earns anything - there is no separate commission or fee on top.

Cash only. We do not take card payments at the counter at the moment, so bring Australian dollars in cash to buy. If you are selling foreign cash to us, we pay you in cash.

Yes. You can register online and request your exchange before you come in, and you get a ticket to show at the counter, so there are no forms to fill in when you arrive. It takes a minute or two. Get your ticket

It applies to any exchange over A$4,000. The rate is quoted at the counter on the day, on the amount you bring. Call before you come in and we will have the currency and the note sizes ready, or come straight up to Level 2 and ask.
