Key information about the euro

The notes and coins, who issues them, and the countries they spend in.

The euro is the shared currency of 21 of the 27 European Union countries - the euro area - and the second most traded currency in the world after the US dollar. It is issued by the European Central Bank together with the national central banks of the euro area, and one euro divides into 100 cents.

Banknotes run from €5 to €200. The €500 stopped being issued in 2019 and, while still legal tender, is refused almost everywhere; many shops will not take a €200 either. For day-to-day spending ask for €50s and smaller. Both note series - the original and the newer Europa series - remain valid.

Euros are one of the busiest currencies at our York Street counter, out of the 22 we hold. Buying euros in Sydney before you fly? Walk up with photo ID, or phone ahead to reserve the note mix you want - and when you are back, leftover euros sell at the same counter, at the live buy-back rate above.

Euro travel money tips

Good to know before you fly - one big rule about note sizes, and three small ones.

Big notes are a problem, not a payment

Across the euro area, cafes, kiosks and taxis routinely refuse €200 and €500 notes, and plenty will hesitate over a €100 - the €500 has not even been issued since 2019. Carry the bulk of your cash in €20s and €50s, with a few €5s and €10s for coffee, tickets and tips, and no till will turn you away.

Tipping is modestService is usually included - round up, or leave 5 to 10% for good service, and a euro or two for taxis and hotel staff.
Cards work almost everywhere - with exceptionsContactless is standard from Lisbon to Helsinki, but German bakeries and markets, Italian cafes and small-town shops still run on cash.
Watch ATM and card feesA withdrawal abroad can cost two fees at once - the local ATM's and your own bank's - and card purchases add a conversion margin. Cash from Sydney has neither.

Things to see across the euro area

One currency carries you from Paris to Santorini - and a little euro cash in hand makes the cafes, markets and ticket counters easier wherever you land.

Common questions about euros

Not covered here? Ring (02) 8014 4222 during trading hours and ask.

Today's live rate is in the calculator at the top of this page, in both directions: the rate you buy euros at and the rate we pay when you sell them back. Euro rates move during the trading day, and whatever the counter confirms when you exchange is the rate that applies.

Upstairs at Suite 202A, Level 2, 60 York Street, NSW 2000, in the Sydney CBD, roughly a four-minute walk from Wynyard station. Come in any weekday from 9:30am to 5pm with photo ID - no appointment - or phone (02) 8014 4222 and we will put your euros aside first.

The conversion table on this page works it out at today's counter rate - A$1,000 and the other common amounts follow the same live rate as the calculator and change with it during the day. Whatever the counter confirms when you exchange is the figure that applies.

No. Euros carry no commission, service fee or handling charge - the agreed counter rate is the entire price, whether you are buying or selling back.

Euros are one of the busiest of the 22 currencies at our counter, so the usual answer is yes, just walk in. If you need a large sum or specific note sizes, phone (02) 8014 4222 before you head into the city and we will confirm it and hold it for you.

Ask for €50s and smaller. Shops, cafes and taxis across Europe routinely refuse €200 and €500 notes - the €500 has not been issued since 2019 - so a spread of €20s and €50s, with a few €5s and €10s for small purchases, is the useful way to carry euros. Mention the mix you want when you phone ahead, or at the counter.

Yes - over the same counter, at the live buy-back rate in the calculator. Notes should be clean and intact; heavily marked, torn, taped or water-damaged euros may be declined, since every note we buy is resold to another traveller or repatriated.

Twenty-one European Union countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Portugal, Greece, Ireland and Finland, plus Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City by agreement, and Kosovo and Montenegro in everyday use. Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Czechia and Hungary keep their own currencies, so a trip that crosses into them needs a second currency.

Yes - bring valid photo identification. Exchanging currency is a regulated service in Australia, and AML/CTF rules require identification for certain transactions, whichever direction you are exchanging.
