Key information about the rupiah
Notes, coins, the famous zeros, and where rupiah can be spent.
The rupiah has been Indonesia's currency since the 1940s and is issued by Bank Indonesia, the central bank in Jakarta. On paper it divides into 100 sen, but no sen coin has circulated for decades and prices are written in whole rupiah - with a lot of zeros, because a single Australian dollar buys close to twelve thousand of them.
Seven notes run from Rp1,000 to Rp100,000. The 2022 series carries the same national heroes as the 2016 notes in sharper colours, and the two circulate side by side; the 2000s designs remain legal tender but are rarely seen now. Mind the zeros: the red Rp100,000 and the purple Rp10,000 are one digit apart.
Australia sends more visitors to Bali than any other country, and rupiah is one of the 22 currencies traded at our York Street counter. If you are buying Indonesian rupiah in Sydney before you fly, bring photo ID and walk in, or call ahead to have the amount bundled; unspent rupiah sell back here at the live buy-back rate.

- Used in
- Indonesia - every island from Sumatra to Papua, Bali and Lombok included
- Also used
- Nowhere else. The rupiah is not accepted outside Indonesia, and by law payments inside Indonesia must be made in rupiah, so foreign cash is not a substitute
Sort your notes by colour before you land: red Rp100,000s together, blue Rp50,000s, green Rp20,000s. In a dim warung or on the back of a scooter taxi, a purple Rp10,000 and a red Rp100,000 are easy to confuse.
Today's IDR exchange rate in Sydney
Our counter's live AUD to IDR rate, both ways: the rupiah your Australian dollars buy, and the A$ we pay for rupiah you bring home. Each amount in the two tables is worked out from the rate showing in the calculator at this moment.
Buying rupiah in Sydney
A$1 = Rp12,058
Pay in A$, receive a rupiah bundle.
- The rate is the whole price - 0% commission, and nothing added when the notes are counted out
- Pay in cash at the counter; we are cash only for the moment
- Rp100,000 is the largest note, so most of your bundle will be red - ask for some Rp50,000s and Rp20,000s for warungs, drivers and temple donations
Selling rupiah back in Sydney
Rp10,000 = A$0.79
Bring the leftover bundle, leave with A$.
- Paid in Australian dollars at the counter as soon as the count is agreed - no waiting
- Notes need to be clean and whole; rupiah that is torn, taped or badly soiled may be declined
- The 2022, 2016 and 2000s designs are all current Bank Indonesia notes - the 1998-1999 series lost its legal tender status at the end of 2008 and has no exchange value
Rupiah rates move through the day with the market, and the time stamped on the calculator is the time these figures were last refreshed. The rate confirmed at the counter when you exchange is the one that applies, in either direction.
What things cost in Indonesia
Bali tourist-strip prices - Canggu, Seminyak and Ubud - which run well above Java or Lombok, and climb again through the July to August and Christmas peaks.
Bali and Indonesia travel money tips
The one rule that matters in rupiah country, and three smaller ones.
Count the zeros, then count them again
Rupiah prices come with five or six digits, and plenty of visitors hand over a Rp100,000 thinking it is a Rp10,000, or accept change one zero short. Slow down at every till: say the amount aloud, match the colour - red for Rp100,000, blue for Rp50,000, purple for Rp10,000 - and count change back before you walk off. Locals often drop the last three zeros and quote prices as '50' meaning Rp50,000.
Things to see in Indonesia
Bali is only the start - and a fold of rupiah covers the warung lunch, the temple sarong, the scooter taxi and the boat to the next island.
Why exchange rupiah with us
Stocking up before Bali or cashing in the rupiah that came home with you - one AUSTRAC registered CBD counter does both, at a rate you can see before you commit.

Something we have not covered? Phone (02) 8014 4222 on a weekday and ask.
Today's rate is in the calculator at the top of this page, live from our counter and shown both ways - the rupiah you receive per Australian dollar when buying, and the A$ we pay per rupiah when you sell back. It moves during the trading day with the market, and the rate confirmed at the counter when you exchange is the one that applies.
At our counter upstairs at Suite 202A, Level 2, 60 York Street, NSW 2000, in the Sydney CBD - about four minutes on foot from Wynyard station. We are open Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 5pm, no appointment needed; bring photo ID. If you would rather have the rupiah bundled and waiting, phone (02) 8014 4222 before you come in.
The conversion table on this page works it out at the live counter rate - A$1,000 sits alongside the other common amounts, and all of them move with the calculator through the day. Because rupiah is quoted in the thousands per dollar, a small movement in the rate shifts the total by tens of thousands of rupiah, so treat the table as today's guide and the counter's confirmed rate as final.
No. Rupiah is exchanged at 0% commission whether you are buying or selling back, and there is no service fee or handling charge added at the counter. The rate you agree, multiplied by your amount, is exactly what you pay or exactly what you receive.
Rupiah is one of the 22 currencies on our board and a popular one, with the Bali trip a Sydney staple, so on a normal weekday you can walk in. For a large amount, or a particular mix of Rp100,000, Rp50,000 and Rp20,000 notes, phone (02) 8014 4222 first so it can be confirmed and put aside. Indonesia requires a customs declaration for cash worth Rp100 million or more, in any currency.
Mostly Rp100,000s, because it is the largest note and anything else makes the bundle thick - but ask for a share of Rp50,000s and Rp20,000s. A warung meal costs Rp25,000-45,000, a scooter taxi Rp10,000-20,000 and a temple donation less again, and small vendors struggle to break a Rp100,000 early in the day. Expect the 2022 series and the still-valid 2016 notes in the mix.
Yes - bring the notes to the same counter and we pay Australian dollars at the live buy-back rate in the calculator, on the spot once the count is agreed. Rupiah must be in good, resaleable condition: torn, taped, heavily creased or soiled notes may be declined, because every note we buy has to be fit for the next traveller heading to Bali.
Landing with rupiah means the taxi, a SIM card and the first meals are covered before you find an ATM, and you have seen the exact rate beforehand. If you change money in Bali, use only a KUPVA Berizin money changer displaying the Bank Indonesia licence logo and number, and count the notes at the counter. The Rp150,000 Bali tourist levy is cashless, while the Rp500,000 visa on arrival can be bought online beforehand as an e-VOA.
Yes. Bring current photo identification whether you are buying rupiah or selling it back. Currency exchange is a designated service under Australia's AML/CTF laws, we are AUSTRAC registered, and identification is required for certain transactions - so have it ready at the counter.
Need a different currency?
Rupiah is one of 22 currencies at our counter - see the full rate board for today's buying and selling rate on each of them.
