Key information about the Fijian dollar
A new polymer series, six coins, and one country that takes them.
Fiji swapped the pound for the dollar in January 1969, two dollars to the pound, and the Reserve Bank of Fiji has issued every note and coin since 1984. One dollar divides into 100 cents. The currency does not float: the Reserve Bank holds it against a basket of trading-partner currencies weighted towards the US, Australian and New Zealand dollars.
Notes run FJ$5, FJ$10, FJ$20, FJ$50 and FJ$100. A completely new polymer series entered circulation on 2 January 2026, and the 2012 flora and fauna notes are being withdrawn beside it through the year, with demonetisation set for 31 December 2026. Both designs spend normally in the meantime.
Nadi is about four hours from Sydney, so buying Fijian dollars in Sydney the week before you fly is the ordinary way to do it. The Fiji dollar sits among the 22 currencies we deal. Bring photo ID, or call ahead for a particular note mix, and sell the leftovers at the buy-back rate afterwards.

- Nowhere else. The Fiji dollar is not legal tender outside Fiji and nothing else is pegged to it. Some resorts and tour operators will take Australian dollars as a convenience at their own rate, but change usually comes back in Fiji dollars.
The 2026 series is polymer right through, so humidity and seawater do far less damage than they would to a paper note. Carry FJ$5, FJ$10 and FJ$20 for boats, markets and taxis, and save the FJ$100s for the resort bill.
Today's FJD exchange rate in Sydney
Every figure in the two tables below comes off the same live AUD to FJD rate the calculator is showing. The upper one prices Fijian dollars going out over the counter; the lower one prices the notes coming back in.
Buying Fijian dollars in Sydney
A$1 = FJ$1.5243
A$ in, island cash out.
- Commission sits at 0%, so nothing is added behind the rate you are quoted
- Cash is the one way to pay at the window right now; cards are not accepted
- Weight the mix towards FJ$10s and FJ$20s: boat crews, market stalls and roadside stops rarely break a FJ$100
Selling Fijian dollars back in Sydney
FJ$1 = A$0.6300
Leftover island cash, paid out in A$.
- The Australian dollars go straight across once you and the teller settle the count
- Notes are checked as they are counted; badly torn, taped or water-damaged ones may be declined
- Both the 2012 flora and fauna design and the 2026 polymer series are current Fijian dollars until 31 December 2026
Our board moves with the market while it is open. Whatever time the calculator is stamped with covers both tables below it, and the number quoted to you at the point of exchange is the number your transaction settles at.
What things cost in Fiji
Resort island prices sit well above town prices, and the July school holidays and Christmas push everything up again. These are ordinary Viti Levu figures.
Fiji travel money tips
The rule first-timers miss, plus three smaller ones.
Resorts take cards, the islands take cash
Denarau hotels, the bigger tour operators and Nadi's supermarkets will all tap a card without blinking. Step outside that circle and the picture changes fast: village stalls, the Sigatoka produce market, boat crews, roadside fruit sellers, taxis and most of the outer islands deal in Fiji dollars only, and the nearest ATM can be a ferry ride away. Work out what the cash days of your trip will cost and carry that from Sydney.
Things to see in Fiji
More than three hundred islands, one main airport at Nadi, and plenty of days where a handful of Fiji dollars is the only thing that works.
Why exchange Fijian dollars with us
Loading up before the flight to Nadi, or turning the last of the holiday cash back into A$ - both jobs happen at the same registered CBD counter.
0% commission, no fees on top
Our AUD to FJD quote carries 0% commission, with nothing bolted on for service or handling. Whatever total the calculator sets against your A$ is precisely what gets counted out in Fiji notes.
Live, timestamped counter rates
The rates here are our own board's, not an indicative market feed: they change during trading hours and show when they were last set. One rate for notes going out, another for notes coming back.

Today's number is in the calculator above, running both ways: what a Fijian dollar costs you and what we pay for one coming back. The Fiji dollar is managed against a basket of currencies rather than floating freely, so it swings less than most, though it is never fixed for long. The rate quoted at the counter is the rate you exchange at.
You will find us on Level 2 of 60 York Street, Sydney NSW 2000, at Suite 202A, about four minutes' walk from Wynyard station. Weekday trading runs 9:30am to 5pm, there is no booking system, and photo ID is all you need to bring. Ring (02) 8014 4222 beforehand if you would rather the Fiji dollars were counted and waiting.
Look at the buying table further down: it prices A$1,000 plus four more common amounts off the counter's live selling figure. As that figure shifts during the day, the table shifts with it, so read it as a live guide rather than a quote. The Fiji dollars actually counted out follow whatever rate is agreed when you swap.
No. The Fiji dollar carries no commission at all, in either direction, and nothing is hidden inside the rate as a service or handling charge. Buy, and the agreed figure buys exactly that many notes. Sell back, and the agreed figure is all of what you receive. Nothing else is added.
Fiji is a regular short-haul run out of Sydney, so the Fiji dollar moves often here; it is one of 22 currencies traded at this counter. A walk-in is usually all it takes. Where the sum is larger, or particular denominations matter to you, phone (02) 8014 4222 before you travel in and we can confirm it and put it aside.
Most of the mix should be FJ$10s and FJ$20s. Those are what boat crews, taxi drivers, market sellers and village stalls can break, and they cover most of a day away from the resort. A couple of FJ$50s or FJ$100s cover a hotel bill or a dive package, but they are awkward change almost everywhere else.
Yes. Bring them back over this counter and they are priced at whatever the live buy-back rate is showing. Condition decides it: every note we buy is going out again to another customer, so it needs to be whole and clean, not torn, taped or heavily marked. Fiji's polymer notes come through a beach holiday in better shape than paper does, but a ripped note is still a ripped note.
Yes, for now. Fiji began issuing a full polymer series on 2 January 2026, and the 2012 flora and fauna notes circulate beside it while the banks withdraw them. The Reserve Bank of Fiji has set 31 December 2026 as the demonetisation date for the older design, so anything of that series is worth spending or changing before then.
Photo identification, whichever way you are exchanging. Australia's AML/CTF laws put money changing inside the reporting net, so customer identification is required on certain transactions - bring a licence or passport with you either way. Have it in your hand as you step up and that part takes a minute.
